Its origin was a simple message on the KOR mailing list, which somehow evolved into a discussion of what might have happened to the original characters. Specific comments about Kazuya, and the mention that he is probably around the age Kyousuke was during KOR, led to the proposal of creating a fanfic to follow him as he travels through Kouryou High School. FOS is set in the manga universe, and attempts to follow its specific details and timeline as closely as possible. However, details on characters other than KOR's Big Three are sketchy, and ten years have passed since we last saw these characters. If you disagree with the liberties we've taken, send us comments. Send all comments to riiya@aol.com. FOS was originally to be released biweekly, in real time. However, the real world has impeded these lofty plans. In any case, we will continue to set stories approximately two weeks apart, and we hope you'll read this episode and all that eventually follow. As is the case with many fanfic series, {word} represents thoughts and [word] represents action within script dialog. |Word| represents English dialog. Fugawari Orange Street is based on the characters and situations of Kimagure Orange Road, created by and copyright of Izumi Matsumoto; new characters and situations created by and copyright of Tony Chen, Greg Dreher, Daniel Lee, Paolo Valladolid, and Jeoff Wilks. Episode text copyright of Greg Dreher. Mystery, danger, and cuteness?" "So what do you think of this one?" Kazuya looked glumly at the TV screen which Akane had set him in front of. "Jason is an American student studying for a year at Toudai University," an unseen male narrator intoned. "He is tall, athletic, with the classic rugged American good looks. He is looking for a college-aged woman with whom to explore the mysteries of Japan. He is fluent in Japanese and also French. Leave a message for #2032." Kazuya: Terribly cheesy. Do you think any girl will really be interested in an American? Akane: Never underestimate the extent to which Japanese girls find American men handsome, mysterious, dangerous, and, of course, cute. Kazuya: Pshaw. [Looks at a clock on the wall] Why is it that I'm spending my last day of vacation at your dating service, again? Akane: It's because Mom is gone and you can't be trusted to do your homework! Kazuya: I am not untrustworthy! Akane: Yes you are. You spent most of vacation with, what, 5 cute girls? Kazuya: They're just friends... err, most of them. Akane: Look, you haven't ever done your vacation homework on time. I had to chase you all over the city before you started kindergarten, for God's sake!* *See manga episode 9.6, "Don't Cheat!" Kazuya: Then shouldn't I be doing homework, not watching your stupid preview videos? Akane: But Kazuya, it's not often I can get the opinion of someone who has no trouble getting girlfriends. "Ch-chotto matte yo!"* Kazuya stammered, but his reddening face belied the words he was issuing. Akane's comments hit very close to home. *W-wait a second! After Kazuya continued to loudly protest through several more videos, Akane finally relented and allowed him to retreat into her office to start his homework. Meanwhile, she continued her own "work" in one of the video cubicles in the rear of her business. With the thought that more of Akane's tortures were waiting outside, Kazuya was incredibly well-motivated to concentrate fully on his assignments. He finished by 9:00 PM, but didn't dare venture out of the office until he heard the sound of videos from beyond the door stop. While Akane was occupied with ejecting a video from the VCR, Kazuya used the Power to levitate himself about a centimeter above the ground; he then quietly glided over the floor behind his sister's back. When he had safely reached the front door, he quickly yelled, "Jaa, oneechan!*" and burst out of the door at a dead run. *See ya, big sister! "E?" was all Kazuya heard from Akane as he sped away. Akane had turned in the direction of Kazuya's voice only to see the front door swing back shut. " Che*... I was going to have him look at this next batch of tapes," she muttered to herself. *Mild expression of disgust Kazuya glanced back and, seeing that his sister chose not to pursue him, collapsed on a bench next to the nearby bus stop. Using telekinesis to levitate himself was extremely tiring, and sprinting immediately afterwards didn't help matters one bit. He silently cursed no one in particular over not knowing teleportation. Kazuya leaned back, hoping to stay awake long enough to not miss the bus which would take him home. * * * * * Kazuya proudly walked onto the grounds of Kouryou High School as his 11th grade year began. He had gotten so close to Kyouko over the vacation. He could see just where this year was leading... though he stopped that thought process before his nose began to bleed. "Will Kyouko be in my class again this year? Ahh, her lovely golden tresses, delicately highlighted by the morning sunlight...." Out of the corner of his eyes, he saw golden tresses lit by the morning sunlight. Or more correctly, two sets of golden tresses. There was beautiful Kyouko, her hair in a long ponytail. And someone else, with hair in the same style. Tall. Mysterious. An American teen? An American guy? Kazuya came to his senses and looked again. Neither blond-haired individual was there. "I shouldn't let Akane's dating service invade my mind like that." Kazuya felt a gentle tap on his shoulder. "Ohayou*, Kazu-kun!" *Good morning Kazuya: Mai-chan! Maiko: Are you in class 2-C this year? Kazuya: N*! That's the class you're in? *Uh-huh! Maiko: Yep! [She holds up her arm, and they do a high-five] This is so great! Kazuya: {It's great to see Mai-chan so soon, but where is Kyouko? I don't want her to think I have anyone before her, or she might....} Kazuya thought back to what Akane had said the night before: "Never underestimate the extent to which Japanese girls find American men handsome, mysterious, dangerous, and, of course, cute." Kazuya: {Masaka!*} Um, Mai-chan, I gotta go! *Can't be! Maiko watched Kazuya dash off, confused. "His behavior is so... so unusual," she thought. "But still, I...." She hoped that no one would see her while her face was this red. * * * * * Kazuya stepped into Classroom 2-C. He recognized the teacher, Furuyama-sensei, from past student council activities. He was surprised, however, to see Emi arguing with the teacher. Emi: My seat should be in the front! I *ALWAYS* sit in the front! I can't afford the possibility of being distracted by the incessant noise of the less-motivated students who SHOULD sit in the back! Furuyama-sensei: That is precisely why "less-motivated" students shall sit in the FRONT of MY class INSTEAD of the back. He glanced at Yukio, who wasn't letting the fact that he was sitting in the direct center of the front row stop him from gazing boredly out the window. Furuyama-sensei: Besides, sitting in the front row, they are much easier TARGETS for my ERASERS. Yukio turned his gaze to the sensei with a gulp. Emi: What about me? Don't you realize the position in which you will be putting me? Without my advantageous seating position my grades will suffer and.... Furuyama-sensei: Are you saying you cannot pay attention from the back of the class? Emi: and... I won't be able to get into that prestigious university, and.... Emi's voice trembled as tears started to roll down her cheeks Furuyama-sensei: Please, Shimada! I've seen you often enough in Student Council meetings to know about your acting ability! So drop your sympathy ploy and get to your seat! "Hmph!" grunted a defeated Emi as she started to walk to her seat. Furuyama-sensei: Good morning, Kasuga Kazuya. Your seat is the second one from front in the furthest left column. Kazuya: {No sense in arguing....} As Kazuya approached his seat and scanned the classroom. He saw Emi take her seat in the back row, in the right-hand corner. He tried to wave to her in greeting but she simply stared at the floor and sulked. The pink-haired girl and the blue-haired girl were separated from each other by 4 seats in the middle of the classroom, but that didn't stop them from chatting amicably. Pink-Haired Girl: Look what my mom just got me! She held up a translucent pink pager. Blue-Haired Girl: Kawaii!* It matches the color of your hair! *How cute! Pink-Haired Girl: N!* I don't really use it, but it looks cool! *Uh-huh! Soon Maiko entered. After glancing at the sensei's seating chart, she smiled broadly and took the seat to Kazuya's right. However, Kyouko was still nowhere to be seen. Maiko looked like she was about to speak, but Furuyama-sensei began speaking. "Welcome back. I hope you all had a pleasant vacation. We have a lot to cover this year, so there's no sense in waiting any longer. Now, let's begin by collecting the assignment from vacation...." Furuyama-sensei moved from the left of the classroom to the right, collecting each column's homework assignments. As he reached the last column, the door softly opened. In stepped Kyouko. She bowed politely, passing the teacher a note and whispering a few words. Furuyama-sensei read the note, nodded, and pointed Kyouko to her seat. She sat down in the rightmost column of desks. Curiosity gnawing at his insides, Kazuya wished he could just telepathically converse with Kyouko. "P.E. comes after this. We can talk when we change classes," Kazuya thought. He dutifully ignored class and paid attention to the clock. "Two minutes. Just two more...." Kazuya's expectant thoughts were rudely interrupted when Kyouko rose. Furuyama-sensei nodded her way, and she quietly left class. Two minutes later, Kazuya went to the locker room to get ready for gym class. However, his mind was definitely elsewhere as he went through the motions of changing into gym clothes and even later, while running warm-up laps on the race track. "Kyouko is almost as mysterious as the day she arrived," Kazuya thought. "Why can't I meet her?" "Look out, Kazu-kun!" His daydreaming was snapped by Maiko's cry. Just then, he noticed he was about to bump heads with her. He stopped himself before getting himself into a situation he didn't want to explain. Kazuya: Umm... heh heh... [With a hand behind his head] it's just that, umm... it's always hard getting back to class after vacation. I wish I was back on Sami Beach. Maiko: {So do I....} Come on, don't dwell on it! It's not like you can go back in time.... Kazuya: {I hope not.... NANI?*} *WHAT? As Kazuya moved back onto the race track, he spotted two blond-haired figures, standing, positioned too close to each other. Kyouko was next to the mysterious American just outside the gymnasium, motioning across the field. "Never underestimate the extent to which Japanese girls find American men handsome, mysterious, dangerous, and, of course, cute." Akane could never be right! Could she? (end guitar licks) END COMMERCIAL BREAK The hellish lunch period soon dragged a hungry Kazuya away from his classroom doldrums. With his mom still gone, he couldn't get an obentou* except from Akane; he wasn't _that_ suicidal. And he didn't help Yukio with his vacation homework. Kazuya had no choice but to brave the riotous lunch room line for the elusive katsu-sand. *Boxed lunch Moving through the crowd was a constant struggle. Bodies were coming at Kazuya from angles he didn't even knew existed! But he had almost reached the front. Then something caught his eye. It was the two of them again! Kyouko and some American. It was looking more and more like Akane would be correct. A student to Kazuya's right noticed his inattentiveness, and issued a full body check on him. He collapsed to the ground, and moved to pick himself up as quickly as possible. Kazuya faced the volunteers distributing lunch, reached out his hand, and.... "I'm sorry, we're out of katsu-sands." * * * * * His hunger sated but his appetite unsatisfied by some inferior bread, Kazuya returned to class. There were a few empty seats near him; there was even one open right in front of him. How he wished for Kyouko to come in and sit right there.... "Sensei?" Kazuya looked up at hearing a familiar voice. Kazuya: Kyouko-san? {Taihen*, I vocalized my thoughts again.} *Terrible Furuyama-sensei: [To Kyouko] Is our guest finished with registration and orientation? Kyouko: Hai, sensei. |Come on in, Phil!| Soon the mysterious blond-haired guy entered the classroom. He stood significantly taller than the teacher, and was probably even taller than Yukio. He wore his hair long and tied behind in an unkempt ponytail. Kazuya thought he looked young, but he didn't know all that many Americans. Furuyama-sensei: Kouryou High School has an American exchange student this year. He will be in this class until next March. Phil: Phil Strickland to moushimasu. Hajimemashite.* *My name is Phil Strickland. Pleased to meet you. (polite form) Kazuya: {Why is she being so friendly with him?} Phil: I'm from the Los Angeles area in America. I... while I'm here... want to learn more... about Japanese culture and... |umm...| learn to speak the language better. Kazuya: {Not another Mr. Perfect!} Pink-Haired Girl: Ooh, he's cute! Blue-Haired Girl: I love his hair! I wish my hair was that cool. Pink-Haired Girl: And it's natural, too! Maiko: I've never met an American before! Emi: [Standing up, above the general din] |I am Student Body President Emi Shimada. Please let me welcome you on behalf of the entire student body.| Emi rose and approached Phil. She opened her daily planner and withdrew a professional-looking business card, laser-printed in English and Japanese on ivory-colored cardstock. Emi: |Please take my card. If there is anything I can help you with, please do not hesitate to ask.| Phil: [Surprised] |Oh... uh....| [Reaches into his coat] |I have a card, too.| Furuyama-sensei: Please, Shimada-san. I'm sure we're all wanting to meet Su-suto-sutorikku... our exchange student, but we still have afternoon classes. Let us leave socializing to after class. Emi: [Taking Phil's card] Hai, sensei. Emi returned to her seat, and Furuyama-sensei was able to get the class quieted again. "This Phil looks well-organized and capable. He may be a good ally," Emi thought. She looked at Phil's card. It showed a super-deformed character looking something like Phil, with the text "Phil!" "Orange County High" and a strange code of pluses and minuses reading: GAT d-(++) -p+ c++++ l++ u++ e* m--- s++/- !n h+ f++ !g w+++ t++ r++ y? Emi sniffed at what Phil did with the sanctity of the business card. "Maybe not," she recanted. Kazuya tried his hardest to pay attention in class, but thoughts of Kyouko and Phil being pushed together by Akane wouldn't leave his mind. "Kazuya, are you working after school?" Kazuya looked up. Maiko was nudging him to consciousness for the nth time that day. He never even noticed that class had ended. Most of the class was grouped around Phil, except for Kazuya, Maiko, and the now-absent Emi and Yukio. Kazuya: Oh, yeah, I've got to get going. Why? Maiko: It seems like many people here are interested in showing Phil around the area. I was wondering if you wanted to join us, but then.... Kazuya: No thanks, I think I've had enough of Phil already. Kazuya picked up his coat and bag, and again left Maiko with a puzzled look on her face. * * * * * "Kyouko and the gaijin spent hours together," Kazuya thought while he should have been washing dishes. "They ate lunch together. She introduced him to the class. What took me a month and a half to accomplish, this guy is doing in a day." "Never underestimate the extent to which Japanese girls find American men handsome, mysterious, dangerous, and, of course, cute." He spun around, wet rag in hand, to face his nemisis. "SHUT UP, AKANE!" "Did you say something?" Master called from back. "Errr... no, I mean, it was nothing," Kazuya stammered. "Why can't I keep my thoughts to myself?" he wondered. "So what's next for Kyouko and Phil? An intimate date at Abcb?" Just then, the front door opened. In walked... Kyouko and Phil. "AAAAAARRRRRRRRRRGHH!" Kazuya silently screamed. Kyouko: Konnichiwa, Kazu-kun! I want to introduce you to my friend. Kazuya put on his best customer-greeting face to cover his internal seething. Kazuya: Anou*... |hello.| *Umm ... "Maybe I'll make a special exception to my no-prank rule--just for your 'friend,' Kyouko-san," Kazuya thought, seething inside. Kyouko: Phil, kochira wa Kasuga Kazuya desu.* *Phil, this is Kasuga Kazuya. (polite form) Phil: [Extends hand] Hajimemashite*, Kazuya-kun. *Pleased to meet you Kazuya stared uncomfortably at Phil, despite his warm greeting. Kyouko: [Not noticing the hesitation] Kazu-kun, kochira wa watashi no America no koukou kara no tomodachi, Phil.* *Kazuya, this is Phil, a friend from my American high school. Kazuya: {They're still this distant after knowing each other before?} [Smiles] Yoroshiku ne*, Fu-fu-fue-fi-fueru.... *Pleased to meet you Kyouko and Phil laughed at Kazuya's futile efforts at pronouncing the unusual American name. Soon, Kazuya had given up and was laughing along. Kyouko: Ne*, Kazu-kun, I hope Abcb is prepared! *You know Kazuya: Huh? Why? Kyouko: We came here just so we could alert you... Much of the class is coming here for an impromptu dinner party! Can you make a table for 16? Kazuya: Si-sixteen? Master: Kasuga, if that many people from your school are coming, you should probably stay in back and work the kitchen. I'll have Yoshimoto come in and deal with the customers. After we finish making the food, take some time off and join your friends. Kazuya: Arigatou*, Master. *Thanks * * * * * Preparing that much food at once was a terrible burden for Kazuya and Master, the only workers in the kitchen. Abcb had had its busy days, but serving this many people in separate parties always seemed easier. But finally, the last trays of food, drinks, and condiments had been prepared. With Master's blessing, Kazuya pulled up a chair and joined his classmates. Kyouko: I moved to a second American school in 7th grade. I had just gotten kind of comfortable being in America, and then I found myself back at square one. Phil was one of the few people who was nice to me in those first few months. Phil: Oh, it was nothing. A couple of years earlier, I was in the same situation, having just moved into the area. I knew how bad things can be. Kyouko: So then a few weeks ago, I found out that Phil got accepted into the exchange program, and even was going to the school I moved into. So I had to return the favor and show him around. Phil: Everyone here has been very nice. I never thought I'd meet so many friendly people so quickly! Varied cries of "It was nothing" and similar phrases greeted this line. Kazuya: {So there's a reason for their friendliness. That's good to hear.} "Never underestimate the extent to which Japanese girls find American men handsome, mysterious, dangerous, and, of course, cute." Kazuya: {Akane, you will be proven wrong!} Kazuya once again looked at the American. He could see how many girls might fall for him. Looking again, Kyouko and Phil still seemed to be sitting too close to each other Kazuya: {I hope.} END EPISODE 7 Fugawari Orange Street Episode 7 Credits | Release Date: 3/31/96 ------------------------------------------------+----------------------- Writers: | Paolo Valladolid | Greg Dreher New characters and concepts and pre-reading: | Tony Chen | Greg Dreher | Daniel Lee | Paolo Valladolid | Jeoff Wilks This series would not exist if it weren't for: | Matsumoto Izumi-sama ------------------------------------------------+-----------------------
